Today, the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps begin the celebration of the services' 250th year. The cities of Philadelphia and Camden are hosting a parade of naval ships on the Delaware River. The celebration kick-off will also include flyovers by Naval and Marine aviators. Events will occur over the coming week and month to commemorate Homecoming 250. The Continental Congress established the Navy on October 13, 1775, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, ahead of declaring the independence of the United States the following summer. They founded the Marine Corps nearly a month later, on November 10. |
